Dataware in the Community

At Dataware we believe in giving back to the community that nurtured us. We do this by volunteering our technical expertise to community projects on a pro-bono basis.

We work with selected charity organisations across Africa in their quest to help those less priviledged. Our most recent elected charity is the Julia Lule Foundation for the Deaf, foundation started in honour of an individual who has devoted her life to the deaf community in Uganda.

We were approached in January 2009 by this foundation to help them with the design and the maintainance of their website.

The foundation is in honor of Julia Lule who is the pioneer of deaf education in Uganda. Julia was born in 1917. She bore eight children, two of whom were deaf.  She focused all her energies on finding a solution to the disabilities not only of her children but to those of all deaf children in the country. Through persistent lobbying Julia was granted a scholarship by the Buganda Kindgdom (kingdom for the Ganda tribe in Uganda) to study deaf education for two years at Manchester University in UK. Upon her return in 1959, Julia started the pioneer classes for deaf African children in borrowed space in a primary school. Over the years Julia supported many deaf children who were abandoned at her doorstep by their parents. In the years after, deaf education has expanded beyond Primary education to Secondary and University education. However, many challenges still face this sector. There is still a shortage of teachers, facilities and equipment such as hearing aids for paritally deaf children. The goal of this foundation is to reach out to the global community and solicit donations to improve deaf education in Uganda.
